NERIT SA (New Hellenic Radio Internet Television – greek : Νέα Ελληνική Ραδιοφωνία, Ίντερνετ & Τηλεόραση) is the successor to the historic line of public broadcasters in Greece. NERIT looks to the future while seeking to tackle the challenges of modern times.
Public broadcasting in Greece, which covers most of the history of Greek television’s existence, begins in 1938 with the founding of Radio Station of Athens (RSA). Later, in 1945, RSA evolved into the National Radio Foundation (EIR). 1966 witnessed the first experimental television broadcast in Greece. EIR was renamed to National Broadcasting Corporation Television (EIRT) in December 1970 and the organization incorporated the newly established television stations within its structure.
EIRT along with the Armed Forces Information Service, YENED, held the exclusive rights to television broadcast. YENED later became ET2, while in 1987, the Act 1739/87 of Parliament transformed EIRT into ERT. ERT ceased its activity in June 2013.
